Internet Security Implementation
The corporate LAN has evolved into a critical business tool, bringing with it entirely new classes of networks: Intranets, Extranets and the Internet. The growth in Internet usage encompasses many network security issues, including viruses, penetration of internal networks, denial of service and disclosure of information. Nearly all companies provide employees access to the Internet and remote access to the corporate network, yet nearly half of these companies do not have up-to-date policies to handle security issues. Now, corporations must re-examine the convergence of all these networks and re-evaluate the roles that firewalls and other devices play in the total Internet Security Solution.
An Internet Security Policy is a set of rules governing how a company deals with Internet security issues and its effects on the corporate Internetwork. The corporate LAN can be thought of as a house, the firewall providing a secure front door to the outside world - the Internet. But there are still windows or other openings in the network, such as dial-up access, telecommuters, online services, etc., which must be considered. These "windows" have redefined the services firewalls must offer, including encryption, authentication, Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and bandwidth management. Using a firewall to provide Internet security is just one example of a firewall's functionality.
The explosion of Internet usage has made firewalls a critical part of Internet security. However, a firewall is not a complete answer to providing security. This is a common misconception companies have and it brings a false sense of security that is an advantage leveraged by unauthorized users. Only through a holistic assessment of Internet security can the best policies, firewall products and deployment tactics be developed.
At the heart of ENC’s innovative approach to Internet security is the understanding that a company's whole network must be taken into account in order to develop an effective Internet Security Policy. Once this assessment has been made and the policy is articulated, ENC can approach firewall configuration in context. Each system will be designed as one part of a company's total Internet Security Solution.
